About MakeMyHomeMyFortress
MakeMyHomeMyFortress is a home-security publication for ordinary homeowners. Not preppers. Not operators. People who want to do the boring, cheap, effective work of being a harder target than the next house on the block — and who don't want to be sold a $4,000 camera system to get there.
Who runs this
The site is written and edited by Randy Plaice — a builder by background who has spent years quietly hardening homes for friends and family. The voice here is "neighbor with skills," not "tactical operator." If a $20 strike-plate fix solves the problem, that's the recommendation. If a product isn't worth the money, you'll read that here too.
What we publish
Three kinds of articles, and nothing else:
- Pillar guides — comprehensive, evergreen pieces on a single topic (door hardening, defensive landscaping, garage security). These are meant to be the last article you need on the subject.
- Honest reviews — products bought with our own money, used in our own homes, evaluated against the alternatives. Affiliate links exist; recommendations are not influenced by them.
- Quick fixes — short pieces on the under-$50 changes that quietly remove your house from the easy-target shortlist.
Editorial standards
- No fearmongering. Crime statistics get cited only with sources, only when they change a recommendation.
- No medical-grade claims. "This product is generally regarded as effective" — never "this guarantees you won't be burgled."
- Affiliate disclosure is at the top of every article. If a piece has no affiliate links, that's noted too.
- If we get something wrong, the article is corrected with a visible "Updated" date.
